Start Your Own Business
Have you always dreamed of being your own boss? Do you have a great idea for a start-up company? Have you recently lost your job and want to try to create your own business?
Starting your own business can be both an exciting and nerve wracking event. There is so much to learn, and so much to beware of that it can sometimes seem overwhelming and impossible to ever realize your dream. But the reality is, millions of people across the world have started their own businesses and become successful business owners. And each of those people started the same place you are today – with nothing more than a dream and a desire to be a business owner.
If you are just getting started, you will first want to follow a few important steps:
- Create a business plan – A business plan will help you answer the most important questions and address the most important areas for concern as you form your business. There are free business plan forms available online, or you can choose to purchase software to assist you, or hire a professional business consultant to help you write it.
- Research state and local laws and taxes - It’s a good idea to hire a lawyer or accountant who is experienced with helping start-up small to midsized business owners. These people will be able to help make sure your business is a legal entity and that all tax details are planned and accounted for.
- Establish realistic expectations - As you write your business plan and talk with whatever business consultant you prefer, be sure to think about realistic goals and expectations as you plan for your first 6 months, 1 year, 3 years, etc. of being in business. Too often people give-up too early on their business because they have unrealistic expectations for what to expect.
It’s also a good idea to consider enrolling in business related courses. Many local community colleges and career centers offer small business related courses, as well as the opportunity for online training as well.
