Plumbers are among the highest paid workers in the field of construction, and there is more than meets the eye when it comes to this career. If you want a job in construction that offers steady income and employment look no further. That said, it does take some training to become a plumber.

The requirements to work as a plumber vary from state to state. In general, most states require a plumber to be licensed. To be eligible for a plumber's license the requirements vary from state to state. However, most states require between 2-5 years of on the job experience and that you take a licensing examination. That is why many people begin their plumbing career with schooling and an apprenticeship.

There are many places where you can take plumbing courses. Technical schools, community college, and even online schools offer plumbing courses. That said, there is no recognized degree for this career path. Plumbing courses are intended to prepare you for an apprenticeship, and or a licensing exam.

While you are taking plumbing courses it is wise to find an apprenticeship so you can gain the hands on training it takes to become a licensed plumber. The average plumber completes about 140 classroom hours and at least four years of on the job training before they consider taking their licensing exam. However, it is important to remember that the requirements vary from state to state.

Plumbers do more than fix clogged toilets and blocked sinks. Plumbers work on water systems, waste disposal, drainage, gas, and pipe installation. Plumbers work both residentially and commercially. When you take plumbing courses you will learn blue prints, plumbing codes, and safety regulations. You will also learn chemistry, math and applied physics.  Plumbing courses teach you the science behind the profession and what is required to work safely and responsibly. Your plumbing apprenticeship will teach you about materials, tools and installation. That is why it is essential to take plumbing course and get an apprenticeship before you try to obtain your plumbing license.
